So the aim of this project is to create a drone, the ground station could be another project entirely.
However I did need something to test with and use. So I have decided to develop a ground station. To do this I will have to create something to read telemetry and also an FPV system.
I had an old netbook laying around, however it didn’t work but I decided to repair it for this project. To repair it I brought another faulty laptop, and swap over the parts until I had a working “Frankenstein laptop”.
I have decided to use an equipment case to house everything. You can see I’ve attached some shielding to back the screen and the WiFi antennas.
YAY! The Frankenstein laptop is back from the dead! Well for now anyway….
You can see the start of the problems. It seems the hard drive was corrupted. Though I had an old sataIII HDD laying around which I managed the get working.
At last the mission planner is working! Was difficult installing the necessary software, had to get all the XP service packs, fix a bunch or drives etc.
Boom! It is connected to my drone. Not the High HDOP – this is because I was inside so the signal was weak.
Isn’t it beautiful?…..
Not really, but I have a plan. Eventually it’s going to look like this beauty:
To do this I need to create an enclosure.
So I ordered some acrylic, and various features such as buttons, LEDS, voltage displays etc…
Here you can see me cutting the acrylic!
Oh dear! It cracked…. Yep acrylic is notorious for being extremely brittle and to make that worse I had incorrect tools and equipment it was bound to happen. Should have brought ABS.
Plan B, because I don’t have the correct equipment I will have to out source. I managed to find a computer which laser cuts designs, so I’ll simply create the design on CAD then send it to them and I’ll receive a precision cut panel. Excellent!
